PosterSpy Poster Competition
Subject: 'Once Upon A Time In Hollywood'
Aim: PosterSpy Poster Competition. To create a poster for the film pulling from the film's style and time period, looking upon film posters from 1969.
For Poster Spy's Once Upon A Time In Hollywood Poster Competition, they were looking for posters that reflected the themes and focus point of the film. What I took from the film was the overwhelming love for 1960s cinema it portrayed. As such I wanted to put the same love and attention into these posters, taking inspiration and detail from 1960s cinema posters. I took the approach of making three posters each based on the three main characters of the movie, with each poster being based off a different genre of film. I tried to keep as authentic as I could to the period of time and graphic design. I used fonts that were used and/or made during the time period the movies release.
Sketches and Research
PosterSpy provided a folder full of inspirational images from the film to be used as inspiration only, and not allowed to be used in the poster out right. From here I also looked into the official posters for the film, other competition entries, and 60s film posters for the genres I wanted to base my character posters on: Romance, Western and Drama.
Final Posters (with un-textured and text-less alternates)
First poster with Brad Pitt's character Cliff Booth, based on the Drama movie posters of the 1960s and early 1970s such as: Easy Rider, Bullitt, Five Easy Pieces and Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid .
Based on Margot Robbie's character, Sharon Tate, and the movies Tate actually starred in like Valley Of The Dolls, as well as Romance movies from the 1960s, such as: The Apartment, Breakfast at Tiffany's and West Side Story.
Based off Western Movie Posters of the 1960s, with Leonardo DiCaprio's character Rick Dalton, posters such as: A Fist Full Of Dollars, The Good The Bad and The Ugly and Once Upon A Time in The West.
Blu-Ray Insert & Sleeve
Subject: 'Once Upon A Time In Hollywood'
Aim: To translate my poster design into a Blu-Ray Insert and Sleeve
My sleeve uses a square cut out on the front that shows the insert through it, which creates a front cover that looks like the original poster I designed. Although the initial competition called for no mention of the Manson murders in the posters, in my packaging design, I decided to give subtle nod of Charles Manson, just like his appearance in the film, by putting him as a small icon on the spine of the insert as well as the opposite spine of the sleeve. I also translated the poster design into an A3 format for my Etsy store.
Concept Sketch and Final Product
Quad, Bus T-Side and OOH Advertising
Subject: 'Once Upon A Time In Hollywood'
Aim: Expand the Poster design into a Film Ad campaign
I wanted to expand my design into a more substantial project by translating the initial design into more formats such as a UK Quad Poster, a Bus T-Side ad and a bench. I also made some slight adjustments to the poster design to more accurate resemble a 1 Sheet poster.
